Unit 143 Board Meeting

May 14, 2008

(Approved June 11, 2008)

President John Samsel called the meeting to order at 7:00 PM. Present were Board members Bob Janis, Bob Wheeler, Sheryl Finkenstadt, Donna Pedrotti, Mark Ludwig, Jane Ettelson, Steve Zenk, Debbie Romero and Sasanka Ramanadham . Absent were Board members Sandy Bigg, Suzi Shymanski-Moore, and Ed Hale. Also present was Mike Carmen.

April Minutes

The April minutes were approved with minor changes.

Corresponding Secretary's Report

The Unit 143 data base is current as of May 1, 2008.

The 2008 POTY report will be updated after the June 1 st Unit Game. The report will be e-mailed to Milt Zlatic and Sheryl Finkenstadt.

Obituary notices for Lorraine Gass, Betty Szoko and Carole Zang were mailed to ACBL.

Printed mailing labels were sent to Chuck Starovasnik. He was billed for the materials.

Printed a report of new life masters from the February thru May Bulletins for John Samsel.

Treasurer's Report

Bob Janis provided a copy of the Unit 143 balance sheet as of April 30, 2008. This showed a balance of $ 5,227 in the checking account. The unit has $35,494 in current assets. The report shows a loss of $2,250 for the months of October 2007 thru April 2008. The report was approved.

STANDING COMMITTEES

A. Awards/Nominating/Club Liaison

Donna Pedrotti has trophies for the May Sectional Tournament. She noted that the manufacture of marble bases for the trophies is to be discontinued. She would like to order $300-400 worth of bases while they are still available. Her request was approved.

D. Membership

Steve Zenk reported 10 new members and a loss of 6 members. Our membership count stands at 1064.

E. Website

Sheryl Finkenstadt reported there was an average of 11,811 hits per month for the last 2 months on web site pages. She also sent e-mails to eleven club owners to gauge their interest in hosting an IMP pair unit game. In response, she received 6 No's, 3 maybe's, and 1 definite Yes.

  1. Publicity

Sasanka Ramanadham provided flyers for the upcoming St Louis KO and Regional Tournaments. These flyers are for the club owners. The advertisement for the upcoming Regional has been sent to ACBL for inclusion in the June and July Bulletins.

  1. Tournament Chairman

Mike Carmen revised his budget to include both the Easy Bridge and the kid's game to be held on Saturday afternoon May 17 at the upcoming Sectional Tournament. Mike' revised budget shows a loss of about $330. Mike also indicated that wireless scoring machines will be tried at the Sectional Tournament. These machines will be used in place of the paper travelers.

New Business  

Some people in Jefferson City and Columbia have informally expressed interest in leaving the Kansas City Unit and rejoining Unit 143. Since no official request has been received, no decision was reached.

Old Business

John Samsel sent an e-mail to Alan Popkin requesting that he expedite hearing on player who caused a recent problem at Beth Percich's game and at Donna Coker's game several months ago. The player has been banned from Donna Coker's games.
